The big question is "What is a computer?"

Is this a computer?  Not really, this is a computer system.  It contains a computer case, monitor, keyboard, speakers, and a mouse (not shown).  This is the way you would buy it in a store.
This is not the computer, although we often refer to it as the "computer."  Upon investigation, this is the computer case containing:  CD-ROM, diskette drive, power supply, and various plug ins.
Computers are made up of motherboards as illustrated above.  They come in various sizes and shapes.  Different styles take different types of memory, and etc.  An important feature of the computer is the Central Processing Unit (CPU) as illustrated to the right

Another important peripheral (hardware), especially for gamers is the graphics card installed in the computer.  The graphics determine the quality of picture displayed upon the monitor (screen). They also have features such as memory.

Hard drives determine how much information is stored on your computer.  This not only includes data, but also programs such as  word processors, games, and etc.  When you loose your data, you will need to reload all programs to the hard drive before you can function again.

In the lower right corner of the information displayed on the hard drive is jumper information.  You will need to know if this is a master, slave, or other type of installation and then place the jumper to the proper position.  Notice jumper area below.

Other peripherals include the CD-ROM.   A CD-ROM stores data, music, games, etc.   It also has a jumper setting.

In order to play music you will need a sound card.
Peripherals include inkjet and laser printers,
and USB devices (hard drive, microphone, and thumb drive).
