Software

Software is not something that you can touch. Software is on your hard drive, diskette, CD-ROM, thumb drive or some other media storage device. The first software you should be familiar with is that which controls your computer, the software that is contained within your CMOS.  Below are a few of the CMOS setup screens that you should be familiar with.

These are the programs that configure the hardware attached to your computer so that your hardware can be used.  The controls tell the computer how to operate.  Example:  What drive should I use to find an operating system?  How much memory should I have?  Do I hibernate or sleep?  These and many more controls are contained within CMOS setup.
Once a hard drive is setup in CMOS the next step would be to boot.  The bootup screen shows what the computer recognizes as attached hardware

After booting the next step would be to mark the hard disk sectors, tracks, and etc. using partition software.  This is the 2003 Partition screen. Lastly, if you have multiple users on Windows XP you might see this screen.

After Formatting the hard drive we need to install an Operating System (OS).
There are many operating systems, this is the Windows XP being installed. Once an operating system is installed, the computer will restart and Windows XP looks like this.  Sometimes Microsoft has updates (improvements) to their software.  Windows 2003 Server appears in a web page background.
XP can be further configured by using the control panel (Start-Control Panel).  There are two styles the Default.
  and the classic view.
There are many applications.  Microsoft has many applications to include Internet Explorer.
Microsoft sells bundled software.  One such bundle is Microsoft Office.  Office includes Word a wordprocessor, and Excel a spreadsheet.

Office includes Access.  This is the default look.
You can create forms for input or output.

There are many other software.  Just to show one last application is a program written in Visual Basic.NET.
